In less eloquent terms, Monty made his cash when he could and now bleeds his heart about open source. It's still unclear what dogmas of free-market principles Oracle offends for it to be held at fault in this case, especially something worthy of forced government intervention. (assuming this campaign achieves anything credible).
Besides, why chest-beat when you can fork() ? Surely, it can't be too late to approach a more *open* company to adopt and re-brand an orphan fork which has a user-base of huge proportions? That, IMO would be a more constructive effort and a fitting answer to any Oracle hegemony, if at all. I'm sure the F/ossverse will rally around in it's usual supportive spirit. Writing letters and petitions sounds utterly silly.
Much as I've loved MySQL all these years, I wouldn't mind seeing it die with this excuse. I'd be more than happy to see this act as a catalyst to adoption of Postgres. MySQL will not be missed (excepting for the drama).
